DECATHLON FORCLAZ 500 / COLEMAN TREKKING POLES
Forget the more expensive anti-shock model. It is just another thing that can fail in the field. These simple lightweight poles get the job done. Ours have been abused for two years in the Himalayas and they’re still going strong. We just wish they came with cork hand grips. Cork hand grips are more comfortable to hold. Fortunately Coleman does a model with cork grips, even if they’re a bit heavier. A must have piece of trekking gear for him and her. Trust us, your knees will thank you after a long trek.
TWO PERSON TENTS
DECATHLON ARPENAZ XL 2 / COLEMAN SUNDOME
Stay snug with your partner in a two person tent. The Arpenaz XL 2 is a two person tent with an additional vestibule. This vestibule helps keep gear and boots out of the rain. An oversized floor area would offer the same advantage as a vestibule, but it would also create a heavier tent. Most tents have vestibules and their size is included in the specs. Bigger is better, but cavernous vestibules can add weight and cost. The Coleman Sundome is better built than the Arpenaz XL 2. On the flip side it does not come with a vestibule, is more expensive and it is also 800 grams heavier.
TIMEX EXPEDITION GRID SHOCK
It’s got vibrating alarms, timers and Indiglo night-light for after dark. The vibrating alarm means you can be up and about without waking your partner. It comes in a hardened resin case with stainless steel top ring and is officially shock resistant and water resistant to 100 meters. We have to admit it looks butch and cool with the military green band.

TOUCHING THE VOID (BLU-RAY)
The epic journey to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, had not been climbed before.
The peak is reached, however on the descent Joe falls and breaks his leg. Despite what it means, the two continue with Simon letting Joe out on a rope for 300 feet, then descending to join him and so on. However when Joe goes out over an overhang with no way of climbing back up, Simon makes the decision to cut the rope. Joe falls into a crevice and Simon, assuming him dead, continues back down. Joe however survives the fall and was lucky to hit a ledge in the crevice. This is the story of how he got back down.
This series of accidents and triumphs will keep you riveted to your couch. It is already a legend in mountaineering annals.
This film is the cinematic equivalent of sitting listening to someone tell you an amazing story in their own words.

‘Wild’ has a really intriguing premise, the idea of a solo hike does it for me but I was wary that the movie lasted over 100 min. What could possibly be entertaining about a woman hiking alone from the Mexican border to the Canadian Border? As it turns out, quite a lot.
At first, it’s hard to understand Cheryl, she definitely does not strike you as a someone who could do this. She bit off more than she can chew, it’s clearly naive of her. But as Cheryl is struggling on her hike, flashbacks of her life before the Pacific Crest Trails are peppered throughout the movie and like anyone you’re getting to know she starts to make sense. You get to understand what she’s been through, who she is, and what motivated her to do this. It’s a challenge that she brought on herself for herself, something she needed.
